An exciting year doesn’t even begin to describe 2011 for the Forum for Equality. This year will see a legislative redistricting session, a regular legislative session, local government initiatives, fall elections for all legislative and state wide governmental offices, and unprecedented growth for our organization.
In order to prepare for these various activities, our board has made a few structural changes and appointments. Forum For Equality LA former chair Kenny Tucker will now oversee legislative sessions and all statewide governmental activities, as our Deputy Political Director for State Government Affairs. Kenny is a familiar face at the Legislature, having testified on numerous matters over the years and having served as the legislative assistant to former State Senator Walter Boasso for several years. We expect that we will have a fight on our hands in defeating anti-gay legislation on adoptions and birth certificates, as well as advancing our own bills on these and safe school issues.
The year will also see action on the local New Orleans governmental level. Our former managing director Mary Griggs has been appointed Deputy Political Director for New Orleans Governmental Affairs and plans on advancing LGBT rights in New Orleans.
As the Forum’s Political Director, I will continue working with our Southern and Northern field directors to organize the LGBT community around the state and promote equality at the local levels. This year will see formalized teams of volunteers in all Louisiana cities, training of many more public advocates, and signing up of thousands of equality advocates around the state. The Forum will be significantly stronger statewide by the time of the fall elections.
We will attempt to interview candidates in all legislative districts, and in the process, educate those candidates on the critical issues confronting the LGBT Community. This will be a massive undertaking requiring volunteers throughout the state. Based upon the results of those interviews and other relevant information, the Forum PAC will make endorsements.
This will be a busy year, and we will need volunteers to accomplish our goals. If you can help in any of these activities, please contact me at email@example.com.
