Grand News: Ninth Circuit Affirms that Prop. 8 is unconstitutional!

“Proposition 8 served no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples.”
– Judge Stephen Reinhardt

Today’s affirmative ruling by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals that Proposition 8 violates the U.S. Constitution is a victory for all loving and committed same-sex couples in California and across the nation. We applaud the 9th Circuit for standing on the right side of history and affirming that the fundamental freedom to marry the adult you love should never be taken away by a popular vote.

Restoring the right of marriage to gay and lesbian couples in the Golden State more than doubles the number of Americans living in a state with the freedom to marry, to almost a quarter of the U.S. population (23.5%). 53% of Americans support the freedom to marry nationwide. Today’s ruling provides security to those legally married couples and ensures access to the critical safety-net of protections marriage brings, as well as the dignity and respect it confers.
