At the end of the legislative session we take time to reflect on the accomplishments and the setbacks that we encounter. We praise those that continuously stand on the right side of history, who push Louisiana forward and fight against the incessant intolerance that stymies our path to a more equal and thriving future. And this includes you, the citizens who answer the calls to action. You make a difference.
Of all the issues that we worked on this legislative session, there is one that stands out in my mind — the attempt to write discrimination into Louisiana law (again!): the “Backdoor Bigotry Bill.” This bill sought to limit the contractor employment protections that already exist in New Orleans and Shreveport and other public agencies as well as prevent any further forward motion in the rest of the state to protect individuals on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
We were honored to have led the effort to stop this awful bill. We sounded the alarm, contacted the press, exposed the hatred to the public, and mobilized other organizations and individuals to fight against it. And even though this bill sailed through committee, educational efforts, lobbying, letters to the editors, press coverage and outrage expressed by LGBT and allied citizens STOPPED this horrid bill! We are proud of the work that was done and we couldn’t have been a part of this concerted effort without your voices and your support. Our members give us the opportunity to fight for your rights in Baton Rouge and we thank you!
And as we thank you, our valued supporters and members, we must also thank those that stand with us. Please take a second to thank the representatives and senators that voted and supported equality. Some names are new to this list and it is important to let them know that there are many equality-minded voters that appreciate their votes and support. Click here to thank them now!
