Brava, Rabbi Berk!

buy tickets acclaimRabbi Alexis Berk accepted the position of Rabbi of Touro Synagogue in the summer of 2008. Since then, Rabbi Berk has been a leading voice in the New Orleans area for human rights and social justice. This Saturday, September 26, Forum for Equality will recognize Rabbi Berk’s amazing work at the Acclaim Awards Gala.

Rabbi Berk has cultivated a welcoming and inclusive community at Touro Synagogue, demonstrating that the religious community is not in conflict with LGBTQ community. Touro Synagogue has participated in New Orleans Pride and the NO/AIDS walk, and hosts an LGBTQ and allies group. On Yom Kippur in 2012, Rabbi Berk spoke powerfully from the pulpit in favor of marriage equality.

Rabbi Berk has implemented pro-LGBTQ changes within the Touro community as well. Under her leadership, membership forms were updated to include people of all genders and same-sex couples. The synagogue also established an all-gender bathroom.

We hope that you will join us this Saturday to honor Rabbi Berk and the other Acclaim Award winners who have dedicated themselves to making Louisiana a better, more inclusive home for all of us.
